Picture Ile Maurice in Umhlanga Rocks, Umhlanga, Northern Suburbs, Durban and Surrounds, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa For those who know Robert Mauvis, one of Durban's most well-known figures in the restaurant business, the Ile Maurice will offer that same quality of food and excellent service for which he has been renowned for more than two decades at the San Geran and later, in Florida Road. His brother Jean and ever-reliable mother Elsie run the kitchen in their new premises in McCausland Crescent, an old Umhlanga house that has been re-built to take best advantage of it's ocean views.

The menu opens with the Soupe De Crabe, Soupe Mulligatawny and the classic Vichysoise. The Camembert Aux Amandes (deep fried with almonds, sesame seeds, served with red currant jelly is more than tempting as is the Pate de Choux a L'Epinard et Saumon Fume (choux pastry filled with spinach, smoked salmon and cottage cheese).

Specialities include Rougaille de Boeuf, slices of fillet cooked with onions, garlic, ginger, chilli and fresh coriander, Prawn Chicken Curry, a typical Mauritian curry with Chinese and French influence and the Crevettes Calamare Creole, prawns and calamari the Creole way with coconut milk. The desserts are a must but the choice between the Crepes Suzettes, Banane au Coco Flambee and other delicious desserts is not an easy one. Definitely one of Durban's best.
