Thava in Midrand takes the total food experience to new heights

A fresh new taste of India has opened in Midrand. Thava Indian Restaurant, which has delighted many Indian cuisine aficionados in its short two-year history in Norwood, is building on this success with a second restaurant in the Carlswald Décor Center on 5th Road in Carlswald.

The Thava restaurants are owned by Mathew Abraham, and are under the consultancy of Chef Philippe Frydman, Chairman of the Academy of Chefs. Thava specialises in South Indian cuisine, particularly from the Kerala region, which is a blend of different cultures and religions - Hindu, Christian and Muslim and which are reflected in the myriad flavours that makes the food from this part of the world so appealing. Thava in Norwood quickly became renowned for its use of the freshest local ingredients and its aromatic dishes - and Thava Midrand is following suit.

Thava Norwood is an award-winning restaurant with exclusive invitations to the Taste of Joburg and the Taste of Christmas. It is a recipient of the 2012 American Express Fine Dining Awards, a nominee in the 2011 RASA Rosetta service excellence awards, it participated in the 2011 Bidvest World Chefs Tour Against Hunger, and has received numerous other accolades on various blogs and social networking sites.

A special feature of Thava Midrand, as with Thava Norwood which scored a first in South Africa for the offering, are the unique Indian Tapas dishes, which are perfect for sharing and for special taste experiences. Indian Tapas is served in tasting portions as a starter, or as a shared main meal; guests can select from a combination of any items straight off the set menu or from the daily specials menu.

Thava Midrand also offers a delectable selection of vegetarian, lamb, chicken, or seafood dishes to choose from, off a menu that includes curries, briyanis, stews, and spicy Tandoori and Masala dishes, all served with traditional breads, rice dishes, and side dishes of freshly prepared chutneys, pickles or vegetables.

A strong drawcard in the Norwood restaurant is the Tandoor oven in open view, enabling diners to see how breads and Tandoori dishes are prepared. This is now also a feature of Thava Midrand, but the new restaurant has taken this exciting food experience another step up with a mobile Tandoor oven that brings the experience right to the table.

This offering is specifically for groups, corporate events, or anyone who wants to enjoy an exclusive fine dining experience.

The breads that are made in the Tandoor oven include a generous selection of Indian flatbreads, including the unique Kerala Paratha, a flaky, crispy, and melt-in-your-mouth bread, and the ever popular naan and roti. The dessert offering includes a range of traditional Indian sweet temptations, or a selection of Illy speciality coffees.

Thava Midrand promises to be as popular as its big sister in Norwood, attracting those who know and love their Indian cuisine, as well as newcomers to the Kerala taste experience. Added to that, the warm ambience and friendly service has proved to be as excellent as the full food offering. Thava Midrand also caters for private functions, office parties, outside catering, and take-aways, offering various set menus, as well as specials that change daily.
