Picture Red Chilli Spice in Craighall Park, Northcliff/Rosebank, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa Red Chilli Spice is a North Indian cuisine ‘hot spot’ situated at the Colony Shopping Centre in Craighall Park. Owner, Matthew Thaver, is a Craighall Park resident himself and opened the restaurant with the aim of becoming a local favourite by creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant opened in 2013 and offers a variety of authentic North Indian dishes in a contemporary and causal setting.

Expect pukka North Indian dishes from this expansive menu. Popular starters include the Drums of Heaven (five marinated chicken wing drums tenderly cooked to perfection) and the Pepper Gobi.

The Fish Tikka, made with Kingklip marinated in Indian spices and yoghurt and cooked in a tandoor oven, is another specialty.

Vegetarians are amply catered for with items such as the Paneer Masala, Aloo Gobi and Chana Masala. All dishes come with rice and can be made to be mild, medium or hot. Extra hot is also an option if that's your preference.

This sweet treat is made with milk powder, cardamom and sugar then fried into small balls before being dipped into syrup and served with ice cream.

The restaurant itself has a contemporary look and feel, with minimalist décor and none of the gaudy objects d’art ordinarily associated with local curry establishments. Unlike many Indian restaurants, Red Chilli Spice is also fully licensed and even has a cocktail and craft beer menu.

On Tuesdays, patrons receive a complimentary craft beer (on tap) with their meals. And on Sunday pensioners receive a 10% discount on both food and drink when eating at the restaurant.
