Restaurants, like the seasons come and go, but O'Pescador which is situated in the Knysna Chalets Resort in the Belvidere/Brenton area, has stood the test of time admirably. Now into its ninth successful year, a combination of hard work, excellent food and good service have paid dividends for owners Manny and Ludette. Aside from the many local residents who are regular clientele, there are a growing number of tourists who return time and again to savour the traditional Portuguese fare.

Decorated in shades of burnt orange and golden yellow with striking floral drapes, the restaurant has a separate bar area, and open-plan kitchen. It is here that Mozambican chef Elias, who trained at the well-known Polana Hotel, expertly prepares an array of mouth-watering dishes capably assisted by Manny, who is in his own words admits to being a self-taught chef with a passion for food. Together they produce a host of appetizing dishes, whilst keeping a watchful eye on diners to ensure that everything is running like clockwork.

The menu offers a good selection of typical Portuguese dishes. For starters try the Caldo Verde - a traditional soup with potatoes, kale and sliced Chourico, perfect for cold winter evenings, and for those who enjoy a really substantial starter the Chourico Assado - spicy pork sausage grilled and flamed with brandy, is excellent. Equally enticing and certainly very popular is the Prego Frenchado - cubes of pan-fried steak served with a wine sauce (the peri-peri is optional) and plenty of fresh bread to soak up the heavenly homemade sauce. For main course, meat-lovers will be impressed with the Portuguese steak - tender and juicy and topped with a fried egg, it is served in a wine, onion and green pepper sauce. A house speciality is the Bacalhau Assado - grilled salted cod fish - prepared in true Portuguese fashion and served with baby potatoes, strips of green pepper and a vinaigrette sauce. To complement your meal O'Pescador stock a selection of Portuguese wines and port, as well as 1920, the renowned Portuguese brandy.
