Picture Le Sel @ The Cradle in Lanseria, Midrand, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa Set in 3000 ha of game reserve, Le Sel surroundings are breathtaking. The restaurant is architecturally magnificent with extensive outdoor seating and wide retractable doors that literally let the outside in. It comes with a long, wide verandah that endows diners with a 180° view of the game filled valley below, rolling Magaliesberg hills beyond and above that, blue sky.

This is the place to come to linger over sundowners and dinner or a long weekend lunch. Children are always welcome and by prior arrangement can take a short walk with the ranger, looking for dung beetles, birds and maybe spot a buck (there are 12 species of antelope in the reserve). Adults too may arrange a game drive or walk.
Picture Le Sel @ The Cradle in Lanseria, Midrand, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa Chef Coco Reinharz is in the kitchen and his menu is bright, fresh and chic, suited to summery outdoor eating. On it you will find things like genuine Belgian waffles for breakfast; grilled baby calamari with romesco sauce or; seared tuna Niçoise style. Wrap it all up with a light hazelnut meringue or poached pears with crème anglaise for dessert. The menu changes every few weeks and converts into a weekend-long tapas menu on the last weekend of every month.

You're also able to take a splendid picnic lunch away with you in a basket (complete with an ice bucket to keep your drinks cold) and sit in a grassy patch in the shade of white stinkwood trees. The concise wine list offers interesting, well priced wines of established quality - and that goes for the Cap Classique too. If you simply can't decide, there are some very decent red, white and rosé wines to be had by the glass.
Picture Le Sel @ The Cradle in Lanseria, Midrand, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa It is a great place to meet friends or to bring visiting guests who would like to see a little bit of veld and game without actually having to leave the city. Le Sel @ The Cradle is an easy 45 minute drive from Dainfern, Fourways or Krugersdorp and an even easier 10 minutes from Lanseria Airport.

Le Sel @ The Cradle gets its name from The Cradle of Humankind, one of eight World Heritage sites in South Africa and the only one in Gauteng. It is here that the first hominid, Australopithecus, was found in 1924 and the area now houses 13 excavation sites. For those wanting to know more, the official visitors centres, Maropeng and Sterkfontein Caves, are within an easy drive of the restaurant.
