Picture Dionysus Taverna in St Francis Bay, Cacadu (Sarah Baartman), Eastern Cape, South Africa Dionysus Tavern was established by husband and wife duo, George and Lisa Pitsiladis who have a love affair with the Greek culture. Their ethos is to provide customers with ‘not just a plate of food, but a social event too’. This is achieved through their array of fresh specialities, warm hospitality and a comfortable ambiance to boot. The secret to their success lies in using fresh, organic ingredients. All the herbs and vegetables used are picked from the restaurant’s garden to make the traditional Greek dishes that they have become renowned for.

To start off what’s to be a hearty meal, customers can pick and choose between a wide range of meze starters. If you’re looking to for some authentic Greek food, the ‘Home Made Dolmades’ are popular among returning customers and are also George’s favourite meals to prepare. Seafood-lovers are spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding upon their main meals. For something a little bit different, diners can choose between the ‘Pickled Octopus’ or ‘Pickled Calamari Heads’. Alternatively, feast upon a couple of meaty skewers – think lamb or mince kebabs. Keep some space for a sweet treat as dessert is a decadent affair. Immerse yourself into the culture by indulging on a ‘Blackava’ or Kourabiedes – the Greek version of shortbread.
